Client license activation on a clustered Interplay server setup

$

Just discovered a very interesting difference with the new license activation methods in interplay. When using a cluster in the past the interplay client licenses (Key-J, Key-G, etc..) were stored inside the database on the cluster. So activating client licenses only needed to be done once on one of the nodes.

That is no longer the case.  Now the license information needs to be added on each node. It works fine and is correctly documented but I wonder... shouldn't each node check its license configuration against the other node as to warn the user about inconsistencies?

I can see this going wrong when applying new updates and one forgetting the second node. Then after months when a failover occurs... BOOM!

Hello,

I have a problem with Media Central (Interplay Central).

Sometimes I have problems running the video.

This is not a network problem.

Anyone know what is the service to run the videos on the central interplay server?

I need to make a restart it.

Consolidate & the option 'Delete only media created with the selected clip or clips'

Hi,

I'm confused as to what the option 'delete only media created with the selected clip or clips' does with reference to our consolidate process in the last stages of our workflow.

First off, I should mention that our Interplay environment (3.1.2) does not use Dynamic relinking - which is deactivated. However - in the manual (yes, I'm in the process of reading it Yes) it mentions that consolidated clips also inherit a 'dynamic' linked status, as subclips do too. Sometimes after heavy production, consolidate failures, and sequences that won't check in, we have a messy battlezone of checked in masterclips and bins in Interplay, and we end up having to delete everything in Access and check the whole thing in again. I guess this leads to unrepresented database assets that remain in the database somewhere??

When we delete in Access before checking everything in again, we move everything to garbage, remove reservations and delete metadata. We do not delete these representations from the orphaned section while we have online media in the master project - maybe we should find these database assets and delete the metadata at this point?

So to the main problem - when finally deleting orphaned clips when the master project is deleted and only the consolidated project remains, sometimes there is a big difference if I choose to delete orphan 'clips' with or without the option checked. Without the option checked there can be up to 10X more associated media data to delete than with it checked. However - there may only be a couple of thousand 'representations' in the orphan list, but there can be 10 or 20 times that amount of 'associated media files' on several workspaces that Interplay finds with the option unchecked. Our house policy is to keep it checked, as we have had offline problems when deleting orphans with the option unchecked (I am told). As yet I cannot get a clear answer from anyone here, as to what might be responsible for offline files in sequences currently in production or why these files end up in orphaned without a reservation. Nobody here seems to know why this happens, and I can see that there are over 100.000 orphan clips in kept media - all kinds of media, all without reservations - some of them many years old.

We have over a thousand projects in production and our general workflow is that we link to various AMA formats & transcode, we also ingest XT3 EVS, we delete AMA master clips, edit (subclips may be created), we post in symphony & protools, then consolidate, delete metadata and then finally delete the orphaned media and assets when the Master project and all reserved assets to the master are gone.

I believe that we do not have a custom scheduled delete, and we obviously do not have the default schedule activated, so I assume that this is why the assets are kept - waiting to be manually deleted, as they obviously are links that reference online media files - problem is - I don't know for sure that I can delete this media or why we even have it in kept?

Drives mounting without client manager

Hi,

I am working in an Interplay 3.1 environment.

Let's say I have interplay USER_1 that has read & write access configured to workspaces on DRIVE_1 and DRIVE_2.

These workspaces are also available as ordinary windows SMB shares, I can mount them as such. So if I have a project in Composer with media stored on DRIVE_2, MC is still allowed to read the data off the drive even if it is not mounted via client manager as FOS. This will of course show clips in sequences that are online even if the drive is not online as far as client manager is concerened. Not very useful.

Unfortunatley - I don't have full access as an administrator, but is it possible to deny a windows network cifs/smb client share to Media Composer so that it allows the so called client manager to soley manage client access?

Hi,

Iv'e an issue with my mediacentral 2.7.2 linked to my interplay 3.6. Theissue involve only the clip that i'm putting into the system and that are still growing. This clip is impossible to play, buffer continuosly and many time cause a permanent lag in the user session (wich can be resolved with a log-out). The strange thing is that theese clip work well wile they were closed.

Doesn't matter how theese clip it is ingested, from a mediacomposer machine or from other system like metus or evs.

Anybody have ideas or solution fo me? :)

Thanks to all you, savers!!

Interplay media status not updating

Hello Dear, all

We are using Interplay  Version 3.1.2 with Avid interplay archive service 1.3.3 and Avid interplay restore service 1.3.3.

I am facing two problems. One is that the status of files for archive and transcode service isn't updating in the Interplay Media services status although the files are transcoding and archiving fine.

The second problem is that some files for archive and restore unable to start and when I cancel it and retry it, it completed successfully.I don't know why I have to push some of these files.I also restarted media service engine and services as well but it doesn't work.

We are using Qualstar RLS-8500 Series library with Flashnet SGL01 v6.4.14 for archive system, it is working fine.I can check the status of the archive file in flashnet , and the file gets archive but when I check it on the media services status, it doesn't update.

Thanks in advance

Imran

MediaCentral - Suggestions

Hello,

I work in a TV station and we have a large AVID production system in our plant. Here we Media Composer users collaborating with MediaCentral users. It's a great system. We had it since version 2.2 and we are now in version 2.7.2. It's quite impressive how the system has evolved in such a short time span.

Now for the suggestions. Here are a couple of suggestions:

1 - We work with disks that contain multiple clips. A single disk can sometimes have a range from 50 to 100 clips. One of the workflows involves a MediaCentral user selecting clips (and parts of them) and arranging them in a timeline. The user has to open every single clip in the Media pane and then drag it to the sequence pane. It's useful when the user wants to select specific parts of a clip. But it can be extremely time-consuming for when the user wants to select a lot of clips, without making any IN or OUT selections on them. The suggestion: The user can select multiple clips in the asset pane and drag that selection directly into the sequence pane (as long as a sequence is open). Or maybe right click on the selected clips and select an "Add to a sequence" option.

2 - We also have an extensive use of the logging function. The logging has some pretty solid export options. But we would like to have an additional one: export to iNews. We have users that use the standalone iNews client and it would be great if those users could see the text of the logged clip in iNews. Right now we do a copy and paste operation, but that's far from ideal. Suggestion: And export to iNews option in the export options of the Logging panel. The user would then select the folder and the story to past it too. A real time export (the story would get updated as the user logs the clip) would be even better.

Keep up the good work guys. Thank you.

Replace associate clip in interplay

Hi!

We have encountered a bit of a problem. Around 15% of our clips have trouble with LONG GOP and one or more frames become corrupt. Normally it would be easy to repair these by 3rd part program, and then import with interplay/media composer to ISIS but...

The assistance have already importert 60% of all the video material and the company have begun editing and using Media Central to logg everything.

Normally outside interplay I would delete the corrupted clip and batch-reimport/relink the mediafiles with the fresh and working ones but with interplay it seems to only work if the metadata (maybe the source id?) to be totally identical for it to replace the corrupted videofile.

Is there another way to replace associate files in interplay? Transcoding the corrupt clips only results in core consistency error, and playing/scrolling over the corrupted LONG GOP frame results in the same error.

Interplay version: 3.5
Avid ® ISIS ® | 5500  4.7.8.16090
Media Composer 8.5.3

The files are XDCAM MXF (OP-1a) Mpeg 2 Video (4:2:2 High), 1080i at 50 fps. These are imported by Media Director or Media Composer with XDCAM 50mbit codec and also, when it works, transcoded to h264 800kb proxy files.

Help!

Ever since Avid decided the classic media indexer database needs to be replaced by a mongodb database and is now running 2 databases on a mediaindexer, we are seeing all kinds of relinking weirdness in Interplay systems when dynamic relink is enabled. With the 7.3.1 version this has now reached the point where the system is no longer workable. Wrong format errors, consistency check failures, and MC presenting AAF's with wrong SourceID's causing transcode servers and MC consoldations to crash or use the wrong media. Only the daily 01:00 at night full re-index of all workspaces by the media indexer seems to bring most issues back in line.

I have tried with support to address these issues but it's a slow process with mixed results. (The quality of support is not subject of this thread).

I'm starting to wonder if the windows system locale on the editors, which on the systems here needs to be Greek for the use of Greek titles, is playing a role. I hope some Interplay users reading this, or L3 support/engineering can join this thread.

But the whole thing starts with a piece of fuctionality inside MC I believe can't be right, while in a perfect world it shouldn't matter. If you enable dynamic relink and consolidate a sequence, you will see that the new sequence links to the new media. But if you the load the old sequence you will see that it now also links to the new media. If you disable dynamic relink this of course doesn't happen. But this even affects the original master clip that will no be segmented between the old and new clips and disabling dynamic relink does not restore the situation for that media. Closing bins and reopening and clearing bin memory sometimes affects behavior but most of the time MC needs to be restarted for some cached info to be 'forgotten'.

Can anybody confirm?

Waiting on follow up from Avid support... again.

I have to say normally I'm in Avid's corner, but I really feel like whatever support model they have setup needs improvement.

Everytime I call, someone answers and takes all of my info - this person struggles to understand what the issue is of course because their role is to simply triage my call. They tell me they can not handle my issue themselves and that one of their colleagues will contact me later. Two issues I have with that, a) they give no timeframe for me to expect the follow up contact - one time they called me back right as I was about the head out the door on a Friday!! b) the automated system requires me to enter in my SysID for the product I'm calling about so that they can route my call to the appropriate department, why then does the person who answers have to forward my info to a "colleague" for a follow up?

Most recently, I've been dealing with an issue where jobs sent to Archive are failing before the SGL server can pick them up. It seems to be a problem with the Providers. I've tried stopping and starting services, rebooting the servers etc, to no avail.

On Feb 18, I was working with someone via email and phone to get the issue resolved, she suggested updating the Access client to the most recent version. Personally, I didn't think that was going to help because jobs sent earlier in the day had been succussful and it suddenly stopped working altogether.

After I installed the Access client patch and experienced the same problem I wrote back to the support rep I was dealing with to let her know that it didn't work. I have not yet received a response and that was 4 days ago!!

This morning, I called support again, punched in my SysID and told the person who (finally) answered the phone that I had an existing case, but no one was responding to my messages. He looked it up and saw my last correspondence, but then proceeded to tell me that he would contact one of his colleagues who would follow up with me! This is infuriating. I have an ISIS that is bursting at the seams and loads of stuff to archive, but I can't get any of it done because of Avid's support model.

ugh.

Interplay in Mac world, Bins, etc.

Hello

I work in a post TV enviroment and we recently switched from FCP to MC. We have 4 stations in our department and many more throughout the company. We are on ISIS and Interplay. We are on the latets versions of all software.

We do a lot of green screen work and have many L3's. In my particular show(I work on a 20 episode long form doc)I have built over 50 green screens and keep them ina particular bin. I have also created over 50 L3's in AE which I have imported and keep in a particular bin.

To save time we have simply copied and pasted bins that are used over and over, i.e. interviews, broll, etc. into each project(101-120) and then populated them with the new material for that particular show. We have also copied and pasted the bins that contain the keys for the green screens and the L3's from the previous episode into the new one, i.e. 108 bins into 109, so that we always have the most current keys and L3's as the shows expand and add new guests and repeat others. We do the copy/past at the finder level. We do not have any problems with this type of workflow but I have had people suggest to me that this is not the proper way to go about it. We have also been told NOT to open bins from another project so...

I would like comments on whether or not anyone else is doing episodic TV and what your workflow is and any comments on how we are coing things.

I should also mention that we are offlining with H264 then going through a restore(uprez) process to DNX145.

TIA

Moving Media from Standalone drive to Interplay

$

We have a situation where I am editing remotely away from the main post-production facility on a standalone Mac MC 7 not on interplay.    I often ingest most of the project media on this system to local drives.  I then need to travel to the post production faciility and get the media onto the interplay system there so that multiple editors can work with the media.  The interplay system is also MC 7 but PC.

Generally I have been connecting the external drive containing the media to one of the interplay workstations and copying the MXF files at the desktop level from the external drive to the ISIS workspace.  Then copying the bins over as well to the project folder (which resides on a different workspace) But we have been noticing that for every 30 or 40 hours of video copied this way, we get a handful of offline files.  Often it is part of a clip - for instance the audio will be online but the video is offline.

After looking at the ISIS workspace and comparing it to the external drive it can be determined that in fact the files were not copied when the bulk copy happened.  But when those individual files are selected on the external drive and copied to the workspace, they appear on the workspace - for a short time - but upon restart, they are gone - no longer on the workspace.  the file count of the folder being copied to on the interplay workspace is well under 5,000 files.

Does anyone have any idea why some files don't seem to "stick" when copied this way?  And secondly, is there a better workflow for moving media onto an Interplay system from a remote system (cloud option not possible due to cost and setup)

Thanks
